How to Replace Spark Plugs on 10th Generation Honda Civic (2016-2021)

three two 1 good everyone garage King here and today got a nice easy video we're going to do the spark plugs on a 10th Generation Honda Civic that's 2016 to 2021 now if you're wondering why I'm showing this shot here of this eighth generation Civic from 2016 to 2011 it's because the spark plugs are much easier you can see here they are right on the top but don't worry we will get them done on this newer Civic so under the hood you can see we do have a few bolts here and how did I figure out everything in the torque well I found this company Emanual online they are very cost affordable and they will provide you with all the information you need and even if you buy the manual it's still going to be cheaper than taking it to the dealership okay so first thing we have is these 10 mil bolts on the top we're going to take them off and remove the cover so now that you can see the cover is removed next thing I'm going to zoom in and I'm going to show you the coils there they are there's four of them and again 10 mm bolts Honda is making this just too too easy so what we have to do first before we pull the coils out is we just have to disconnect these electrical clips so we're going to disconnect all of the four electrical clips and then you'll see I'll pan in here there is a little connector right here so we're just going to sort of push that Tab and pull the Electrical uh harness I guess if you want if I can say that out of the way next up again 10 mm bolts like I said earlier let's take them out and then we are going to zoom in and get a closer look on our coils you can see here they're nice and loose so we're going to take each coil out we're just going to pop them out now once you take them out it's a good idea always to take a look I just you know you never know if you see oil down there or who knows what just to make sure they're fairly clean but it doesn't hurt to also good practice give them a little blow of air and this is just to ensure that you don't have any dirt or anything like that going in the threads or getting into your engine you just don't want that happening last thing you need is dirt going into your engine when you're changing the spark plugs or ging up the threads of the plugs themselves you just really don't need that now what I'm using for this is a 14 mm socket on an extension it is a locking extension make sure you have a really good magnet if you don't have a locking extension cuz most likely you're going to drop your socket in there now the other alternative is to actually get a long 14 mm special socket for this job but I was just too cheap and I had a lockin extension so I thought you know what why not it works for me and this way it saves me buying a socket that you know I don't know how often I'm going to actually use now because I don't have a specialty socket you see here I need to use a magnet uh to pull them out cuz the socket's not going to take the mode now I chose to use genuine Honda sparkx for replacement and you can see there's a part number 1 229 582 a02 this way there's no worries about wrong Parts going in the car and I know there'll be no check engine lights and everything will work just fine anyway let's move on so now you can see I've taken the spark plug go to the box and there's this little piece of cardboard what is it well it protects the threads because there is a tiny bit of antias on them so you want to put that card you want to take the cardboard off at the very end now this tool that I'm using I tell you everyone it is priceless I use it on everything even doing like snow blowers and stuff like that just because it will not allow you to cross thread the spark plug and how does it do that well with the way it's designed with the rubber it can only apply you can only apply so much torque to the spark plug and then what'll happen is when you're turning it it's just going to slip anyway so this way it prevents you from damaging any threads or gulling anything because the last thing you want to do is take the cylinder head off the engine because you messed up the spark plug threads so I find this tool is just super handy and I use it on a bunch of edges and plus it's like super flexible and it bends every which way anyway enough about that tool so I went on a few forms and some of the torque specs were wrong so as I mentioned I found them on this e-manual online and I will tell you the torque specs for the spark plugs are 16 ft-lb on another note isn't the sound of this torque wrench just satisfying anyway let's just move on there you can see I had a little bit of dialectric Grease and what I'm doing is I'm just putting it in the bottom of the coil there you can see just a little amount and what that does is it just prevents sticking later on and the coil will actually come out easier not to say you know you have to use it you don't have to use it but I just find it is good practice to use it and throughout my whole Automotive career I've always done that and I've never had a problem and I use it on all high tension leads it's just one of the things that I do so next up what we're going to do do is we're going to put the little 10 mm bolts back in and if you're wondering what the torque is for those bolts I'll throw up part of the service manual and if you look I guess it's hard to see but trust me it is 9 ft-lb so that's what you're supposed to torque these both bolts to so once you have that done what you're going to do is you're going to plug back the wiring harness you're going to plug it back in uh make sure that you do clip it to the top of the rocker cover so it is fully seated then what you're going to do is just put the cover back on and as far as the bolt torque for the cover you know what for these ones I just hand bomb them in with my quarter drive ratchet so that's all I did with these ones and then if you stick around right to the end you'll see exactly what tools I did use I know I sort of described them during the video but it's kind of fun to go through it after the fact and if you have any comments or suggestions please leave them below I do answer all my comments so now what we're going to do is we're going to see what tools I use all right so what tools did I use well I had a torque wrench obviously 10 mm sockets right there one quarter drive right there just made it easier something small that was to pull the coils out 14 mm on the extension and that was to take the spark plugs out make sure you have a locking One locking socket you don't want to lose that ratch it to go along with that 38 and that was to pull out the spark plugs this is perhaps one of the most important tools this is to install the spark plug and make sure you don't crossthread it this will not let you crossthread it because it doesn't grab it that tight so I love this tool I use it all the time it's super bendy absolutely love it highly recommend everyone gets one what else did I have some air make sure we don't get dirt in the engine blow out the plugs before you remove them magnet to take out the plugs this you don't really need but I just find it's a good habit to do a little bit of dialectric grease on the coils there just to protect the plug Ceramics anyway that's it if you have any questions let me know garage King over and out
