greetings everybody this is a 2005 Toyota Corolla with a 1.8 L 4 cylinder manual TR anyways it's a Toyota today I'm going to show you how to change the ignition coils this is a super easy project you don't need a lot of tools and I'm going to tell you why I needed to do this while I'm doing the change so while driving to work the other day my engine light came on so naturally I reached into my trunk and grabbed my ob2 reader now I've got it linking right now and let's see what pops up p0303 cylinder 3 misfire what else do we got 302 now at first it was just 0302 so the first thing I did was put some new spark plugs in that's pretty easy to do that didn't fix things so I pulled off some stuff pre- loosened of course unplugged these little guys took off the ignition coils and I changed each of the spark plugs and I'm glad I did cuz as you can see there pretty worn down that's the worst one out of the four well that didn't fix things and cylinder 2 was still misfiring so I pull out this ignition coil swapped it with three so it goes 1 2 3 four I swapped those two turned on the car tried to drive and now it was only cylinder 3 misfiring therefore figured out that number two had a bad ignition coil everything else was all right parts in the mail now if you're lucky enough well your top cover will be held on with one two three four bolts that can be taken off for the 10 mm line only had two I've already taken those off so with those off you got a bunch of stuff exposed it's a good time to clean all this up before you start opening it up big towel maybe some degree Circ but I've already done most of that I'm not Terri wored now listen these off you just got to give them a little squeeze and a wiggle hopefully that's all you got to do with yours squeeze and a wiggle and then using your 10 mil you have to access two bolts that are holding this little bar all these wires down I've got two things holding this down one of them is just on the end of cylinder 4 behind my engine oil reservoir cap fill thing over here me some that off your nut safely deci side for me the other one is in between cylinders 2 and three that one's a bolt instead of just a [Music] nut and you can carefully move that harness out of the way if you really want to get it looser there's some things holding on that cable I'm only I'm just going to demonstrate on uh number two cuz that's when I'm changing there's one hole down on top here it's a very short bolt it's not torqued down very tight when you do replace it get it tight and then just a little snug I think it's around 20 foot lbs and that should be able to just wiggle out there we go so that according to my my OBD2 reader is the culer if you're doing your spark plugs as well here you use a 5/8 you can tell by fitting one of your new ones your 5/8 with a short extension or'll reach down there you don't need to go too far I've already done mine uh so I don't need to replace new ones get that out of here here's my new ignition coil it sure looks a lot like the old one thank goodness length is right good I'm happy with that and that's just going to slide right in good time to clean things around you can get an ignition coil for these vehicles anywhere between 30 each and $200 each depending on what brand name you go with make sure it has a nice snug fit where the spark plug meets that nice little rubber boot and there's a small spring inside just snug and a little twist doesn't need to go too hard before I bother seeing if any other ones that have issues I'm going to quickly put these in cuz that was literally less than 5 minutes work place your wire in harness and I only have two bolts holding mine n this one has a nut drop it down unless you feel it crawling through your engine and can go ahead and replace each of those little electronic wiring harness clip things make sure I don't have any loose objects and let's fire this up and see how it sounds okay that's a huge Improvement for me that Sound sounds way better now I still have my engine light on so if you're lucky enough to find these on sale I picked one of these up for about 110 bucks at my local Canadian Tire whatever you America might have who knows overseas British tire anyways I'm going to get that plugged in and let's reset the code okay I've turned the vehicle off plugged in my OBD2 reader and let's see what it says now while I still have those engine lights on my Dash I'm going to go ahead and reset them using this huge and like easy investment uh if you take your vehicle to a dealership or to a mechanic shot they're going to charge you over 100 bucks just to check what your code means now I still have those codes in my system so I'm going to reset those are you sure of course I am let's erase everything one moment please erase successful okay usually what I do at this point is remove my key I mean you could remove the battery too if you want but let's quickly turn it back on again wait for everything to load up no powertrain well that's cuz I cleared it so let's start this vehicle up actually I get rid of my OBD2 reader for a second and the only lights on are the one that's been there for years I still have to figure out why my battery lights on my alternator's good my battery is good let's go drive this thing around all right she lives so far 1 2 3 4 running good this thing is still alive I rebuilt that c59 transmission in my basement you should check that video series out on how to uh fix a transmission for under you know not mechanics prices let's go for a quick test drive but thank you for watching if you don't feel like watching the rest okay it's shifting good it's revs nice there's no side noises that go cuz it's missing you know one out of the four cylinders I'm happy with this I'm going to drive it you know at least for the next week with my tools in the trunk my 10 mil my 5/8 and 40 spark plug and a few other things we'll go from there okay it's time for a little driving clear on the highway let's go so aside from my funny battery light there I think this old Corolla still got some life left in it all right let's slow things down a little bit here but that accelerated no problem for the last couple months it's been struggling I just figured it because it was old looks like changing four new spark plugs and replacing that busted ignition coil was a good thing it's a nice day out thank you so much I really hope this helped you solved your p0302 or your p0303 or one of the other digits for your vehicle it could just be an ignition coil I fixed mine for the price of one ignition coil I didn't even buy all four have a great day I miss you all bye uh no oh I just oh it's fine it's fine just leave it
