and welcome to my channel in this video I'll show you how to replace both the front and uh rear brake pants on a 10th Generation Honda Civic uh the one in this video is a 2020 Honda Civic 1.5 L ex model uh starting with the rear brakes but regardless of which you want to remove some of the brake fluid from the reservoir if you have a an air compressor and and one of these types of section devices if anyone is interested um leave me a comment and I I'll tell you uh the part number for this I get this from Harbor Freight it makes it easy to section the brake fluid you want to uh otherwise with a turkey baser you can do the same thing uh and then just uh replace the cap um you don't want to remove uh uh much beyond the minimum Point uh which is clearly marked on the brake reservoir so you want to remove um uh enough brake fluid until it goes to the minimum level and then um if you have a uh an air gun then you can remove the wheel bolts uh at any time even when the car is lifted or that that wheel is lifted but otherwise you want to remove or loosen the bolts first while it's underground and Chuck the front wheel so uh in this case this is the rear driver uh wheel um you want to truck the front wheel uh that truck that you see there that was just there because I was doing something else but um and then uh you need a jack uh of course to uh and you can do this one wheel at a time then place the tire under the car uh just for extra support and then um I don't think I show this here but the Jack uh there's a jack stand uh right in front of this wheel under the suspension you can find any place to place the jack there and there's a clip that you remove very easily and then after that there are two rubber or plastic caps that uh sort of hide conceal or or actually protect these 7 mm uh bols and the pen guides uh they're actually pen guides uh so you'll need a wrench of course you'll need a torque wrench and I'll be sure to give the torque values and the in the video in the description uh with the rear brakes you'll have to remove both um guide pins but with the front ones you only do the lower one and uh sort of slide or raise the caliper up um so here you you want to remove both bolts and then that will enable you to uh lift up the caliper uh now the rear one uh takes a little more time because of the e brakes you'll have to retract the E braake uh so there is the piston and then uh and then inside of that there there's another piston and that's what's operated um uh gets operated by the by the motor and the E bra system uh so uh the Honda service manual uh has a different procedure for this there are multiple ways you can do this if you have a high-end scanner even some mid-level scanners you would be able to do this some some manufacturers allow you to do this from the dashboard and they provide you with the uh software on the dashboard where you can retract the E bra uh but Honda Civic don't uh so you would have to do that manually and of course the dealer would charge you hundreds of dollars for this job uh you can do this uh very easily with just two cables um that you would connect to the positive and negative positive being the red terminal and the battery and then um and then I'll show you in a second uh and then to to the terminal that is closest to the motor um uh so uh and and the negative to the other one you know the the black the the black uh terminal and the battery uh that would be the negative U terminal and so you'll need two cables long enough from the Barry of the car or if you have a spare Barry someplace you can do it um closer to the wheel uh so this is the plug and it's very easy as I showed here um you kind of press this just uh and and you can you can as you press it uh you pull it with the other hand and it will come out easily uh hopefully for you too uh I have a Power Probe three uh it's about1 uh dollar or so on Amazon on it's a great tool if if you do a lot of car maintenance and electronics definitely I recommend that you get this but this is the negative um terminal of the of the outlet here and and and so you you gave power with the Power Probe uh to the other one the one that's closest to the motor and and then that will retract the brake now if you get the excuse me if you get the terminals wrong then what you'll see is you'll see the Piston coming out so pay attention to that uh as it comes out then then you know that it's going the other way and here I I have this tool piston compression uh U press tool uh that I'm using where you turn it and press it at the same time but you don't need this uh you can use any clamps uh I'll show you with uh once I do the front brakes you know you can use just any any piston press tool basically uh to press it after after the E bra has been retracted uh so so just with two cables uh you should be able to do this job uh very easily two cables that will um connect your batteries uh positive and negative to the positive and negative of not the plug but the motor itself and um and so once again uh if you uh and and you probably want to do it that way you know um uh connect the positive side the red side to the terminal that is away farthest away from from the motor and then you'll see that the Piston actually comes out comes further out uh and that will tell you that it's going the the wrong way and then you just switch the terminals or the connections and uh and then you will not see the Piston move at all that's because like I said there is another piston inside um another cylinder uh that's the one that retracts so that retracts all the way back which enable you allows you to press that that second housing the larger housing the one that you see um that you can press that with a a a piston press or a clamp or whatever you can find uh even even with your hands if you're strong enough uh to depress that or to uh move it in so that's that's basically the procedure the rest of this is just like if if you have done any um brake pad job uh it's it's very simple under the Honda Civics uh uh you want to make sure that you um add some uh uh caliper grease to all the touch points um anywhere that the metal touches metal uh a light a light coat of it and the other thing to pay attention is you know as you remove the brake pads uh just pay attention to the orientation of the pads um that M thing you see in the bottom right now that that goes towards the bottom uh and on the inside uh so pay attention as you remove the pants um or just watch this video and of course don't forget to uh replug it and press it make sure you hear um distinct sound a click and um and of course the guide pins um you want to grease those too uh clean them first with brake cleaner and then um dry them and then and um a light coating of grease uh uh it's this is a critical part of this the guide pins for the front brakes but not here I mean here it doesn't matter even if you apply more grease um but on the front one uh as I will show you it's very important that you apply a light coating if you don't want your brake uh pets to wear evenly uh you'll need a cardboard um Shar towels light uh some kind of light source um uh brake cleaner of course um uh some brushes uh if you have a compressor and air gun would be fantastic uh before you apply brake cleaner uh you can you can dust off the whole thing because as as you know breake um brake calipers um produce a lot of dust now um this is this not my car um and and the owner did not want to replace the the rotors even though um I advise that they should be because the surface is not all um even as you can see but because the front rotors were in much better shape um he decided to do it U next time uh so it it makes sense to do this uh to replace the rotors every I would say every couple of uh brake pad Replacements and so torque them and then uh just go on one side uh press it all the way in on the left or right and then uh then kind of force it force it down and it will go in uh this clip and after that sort of uh move the caliper back and forth you shouldn't feel any movement and uh before you put the tires back on uh test so uh you want to release and apply the e brakes couple of times and uh if you have somebody else um to kind of monitor at the wheel um listen to the sound of it retracting and um um coming out and of course the light indicator the brake light uh the red brake light on the dash uh should come on and go off uh as you release the and the E bra and then apply a generous amount of uh brake cleaner all all around and if uh if you live in the North or um uh your rotor sort of Rusty uh then it doesn't hard to apply a light coating of um caliper grease here too that's where we'll uh we'll touch it so you should be able to hear the the e braake at the wheel and of course the indicator light would also tell you whether or not um you have done it correctly and anytime you replace um especially if you replace the rotors and pads together then you would have to sort of uh there's a special procedure and I'm not going to go through that you can Google it or watch YouTube uh you don't want to apply the brakes um hard uh suddenly uh you want to sort of um get the two the rotors and the the pants to get used to each other so gradual breaks um uh at slower speeds initially for a few miles and so in the front again uh there are two guide pins or two bolts you would have to remove um and uh I believe these are 34 Newton M um the torque value uh so do the lower one first just uh remove that and and and Slide the caliper up and there these two hooks pay attention to the orientation of them you know the the pointy side face each other the pointy sides of the two face each other or I should say the the site that is U connected the SES that connect to the calipers um uh don't face each other they're away from each other and uh and I'll show you how to put those together it's a little tricky uh so um with with brake pads I mean depending on um whose pads you use this these are genuine Honda brake pads and I'll have the part numbers uh in the description and probably in the video too they're they're not very expensive uh 50 60 bucks um per Set uh meaning for the front and uh one set for the front one for the back uh you want to apply a thin coating of Grease um to the backing plate and compare of course before you do anything compare the the parts to each other the old versus new uh these pads from Honda did not come with any additional Hardware so I'm leaving U everything else intact now the front uh pads for uh those who have keen eyes U uh in this case uh we're not evenly um worn out uh one was a lot more than the other uh and the reason is because um whoever did this job before for this owner uh greased the end of the guide pen and that uh that just uh disables the pen to go all the way in Freely and when that happens uh one side wears out um less than the other so again lightly U Grease the touch points Where Metal touches metal and make sure you don't get any of the grease on the side of the the the pad the pad itself where uh it touches the rer and be careful with your hands make sure your um hands or your glove are clean all right I should say dry so here's the guide when you you kind of uh as as you can see there's this Orange um grease dried grease on top of the pen and that shouldn't be there so clean it good apply some brake cleaner which I don't show here but um and then uh 10 coating of the grease all around but not on the tip of it and then as you slide it in push it in and out a few times and make sure that the the yeah push it in and out and then make sure that the it goes all the way in just like that so this is the clamp this is just some regular wood clamp that I have uh you could do the exact same thing with the rear calipers too uh to press the piston and you want to do this because the brake pads the new brake PS have more material breake material on them and uh and so here's the tricky part of this job uh you want to you want to insert the top one the top uh hook and then lower the caliper enough that um the side Su it holds um the pads in and then and then do the bottom hook just just like this and of course uh this takes care of the bottom guide pin and you want to do you want to regrease uh clean the old grease from the top one too so that's why I'm doing the top uh the brake pad is done replacement is done and so you don't want to lower the caliper all the way just enough so you can uh and it will be kind of held by the um by that U cable too as you can see here tons of dry old grease on top of it whoever did this job last time and did not know what they were doing make sure that the rubber cover goes all the way to the end because that keeps it protected from um dust and debris I think think this is a 12 mm socket and uh I'll give the torque value in the description so after that just some clean up I'll fast forward through some of this really the job is done so once you do all all four tires of course you want to before you turn on the car you you want to press on the brake panel a few times until it gets hardened um and then and then turn on the car uh test and the driveway first before you pick up a speed and go any place make sure that um the car stops and then replenish um the fluid I have another video on how to flush the fluid but um add enough flew it up to right below the maximum line and you're done I hope you find this video of use and um I look forward to your comments thank you bye-bye
