How to Remove and Replace the Alternator on a 2020 Honda Civic 1.5L Turbo

[Music] welcome to ucanic today here in canick we have a 2020 Honda Civic here with the 1.5 liter motor in it and we're going to go over how you would remove the alternator for replacement so to be able to to do that now this is except 1.5 liter with the turbo and our alternator is located on the back of the engine down through here most of the work you can actually do from above or from above or below and then if you're going to do it from below you got to remove the front right tire and if you have the splash Shield the secondary Splash Shield you would remove that also and then before starting this project it was definitely want to disconnect your negative battery cable because there is electric cable that we need to unhook and if we don't disconnect that you can cause some bodily damage or vehicular so you're going to need a size 12 millimeter socket and or wrench as well as number 19 to be able to remove the serpentine belt so there is a size 12 that holds a nut onto the alternator as well as one push electric connector that we'll need to undo um to number 12 millimeter bolts that hold the alternator on and the 19 is used for releasing the serpentine belt so you can see if you look down through here is the there's a aluminum color nut deal and that's what you would get your wrench on but there's not a it's not a space right here to be able to get a wrench on a 19 millimeter so I'm going to show you from the bottom what you're looking at and I find it easier to do that portion from the bottom than to be doing that from up above so down here on the bottom from the front right tire has been removed the tire is or the vehicle is jacked up and supported on jack stands and then our alternator is in this location back here and we can actually get both of the bolts from down here fairly easily and you can also do it from up above but we're gonna do it either way and then over here this is the tensioner and if you follow it up the tensioner there and then you have an idler pulley that's part of the tensioner pulley we have a big uh nut up there and so take a number 19 and get it on that and then you'll be able to release the tension okay we've got our tension released and now we can remove the belt now we don't need to take it all the way off because we are just undoing the alternator you have our alternator right up in here you got two uh 12 millimeter bolts to remove Okay so we've got the uh first bolt removed now we will actually remove the other one from up above because it's actually it's going to be a little bit easier to do that and the alternator will be coming out from the top side okay so looking at it from above our alternator is right down here and then um why we're here before we undo that last Bolt I'm going to reach around the back here there's a rubber boot to pull off of the size 12 pull off to expose the 12 millimeter on the back there this is the 12 millimeter for the electric connection there is another electric connection and that's a squeeze clip so it'll be just as easy to get undone once we undo this topple so there's the uh 12 millimeter all right so there's the uh 12 millimeter Bolt from the top of the and now we'll need a pry bar or a good screwdriver we're going to reach down in here with our pry bar we got the top free now we're gonna have to wiggle it a little bit we get the bottom side of free or maybe use the pry bar again and what since we have it laying down there we'll go ahead reach back here there is a cable like a push and cable on there to hold the wires in place the alternator should be able to come up essentially through this hole we have this um plastic molding in here so we're just going to push these clip together it's like a heat shield molding we've got the uh all-nighter out just got to be able to spin it around the right direction to get it to work up you're going to take your new alternator and this is where you either remember the way you brought it off okay so we got it down through the hole if you want you're gonna I'm gonna flip it upside down and be able to find the electric lines and start oh just reach around and attach those once we get this on there so you get the bottom one and then pull and rotate it up okay so I went down and got the bottom bolt started now you just be able to pull this top one up and in and then start that and so now before I get too much I'm going to reach down here and get that electric this is all by Phil if you need to visually see it you can get under the car and look at it from behind the the axle there so I have the uh the top one the 12 millimeter nut goes on and that's sitting on there all right so we tighten that put the uh there's a rubber boot cover we'll be able to cover it back up so that you keep the majority of moisture out and then again just filling around we have one electric connector that we need to connect press and it clicks in right got all the electric hooked up now just need to tighten the um the 12 millimeter bolts that'll hold the uh the alternator in place all right so that's the top one tighten we'll go down below and we'll do the bottom one and then be able to put the serpentine belt on have the the bolt down here at the bottom to tighten up the 12 millimeter that holds the bottom of the alternator on okay the uh the bolts are tight now with our number 19 wrench we are going to release tension off the tensioner and then be able to because we didn't take the belt completely off okay we've released the tension on that tensioner be able to route the belt around that alternator fill the belt around all the other pulleys make sure that all the ribs are where they need to be and how we can release our tension and then also still double check the ribs are in the grooves and in between the pulleys the way they need to be she all made her on your 2020 Honda Civic with the 1.5 liter motor in it thanks for watching you panic where you can be the mechanic
