How to Change Oil on 2018 Honda Accord 1.5L Turbo (and Similar Vehicles)

what's up everybody it's Paul from boosted films and in this video we're going to change the oil in this 2018 Honda Accord so this is the 1.5 L turbo engine but of course this procedure is pretty similar for a lot of different cars and here are the items you'll need to complete this job you're going to need a 17 mm wrench or socket of some kind you're of course going to need a new oil filter you'll need some new oil this car calls for 0 w20 oil and it takes about 3.7 quarts so you're going to buy four quarts basically you're going to need jack stands or some sort of ramps to drive up on cuz of course you got to be safe anytime you're underneath the car and if you're using jack stands you'll need some way to lift up the car so you need a floor jack of some sort or in this case this video is actually done using a hoist and you'll need a flaad screwdriver and some sort of oil drain pan or somewhere to put your old oil so again I did this job on a hoist which made it easier for me to film this and give you a better view but I'm going to show you what you need to do if you want to lift up your car with Jack stand so there are four points where you would typically lift up with a hoist and you can see this little Bend in the body pinch area right here uh that's what I'm going to use to jack this up I know technically it's supposed to be only for the Hoist um but I've jacked up my car there many times it works just fine so here you can see where those spots are however uh there's also these are technically the jacking points you're supposed to use but it's a bit tricky to get to that one in the front I feel like it's so far back it's harder to get to but you could use that jack point as well and then uh just going to give you another shot of where I like to put the jack stands if I'm lifting up just the front of the car there's uh this solid piece here that you can put your jack stands on so we're going to go to that and we'll show you that in just a second when we set the car down on jack stands but before you try to even jack up your car try to make sure you're on some sort of level surface you don't want it at a big incline you don't want the car potentially be rolling anywhere once you jack it up so of course have your car in Park have your parking brake on and then if you have a wheel chalk or something to keep your car from Rolling add that in this case to the rear wheel of your car I don't actually have a wheel chalk but I just have this rubber mallet that should serve as uh something to keep the Wheel from potentially rolling back so once you have a wheel chalk in place or something to keep your car from Rolling uh we're going to go and jack up our car here with our floor jack again safety precaution here this floor jack is only meant for raising and lowering your car do not ever go underneath your car with just the floor jack holding it up so that's why we got these jack stands these stands will hold the car in place so I'm going to show you exactly where I put them on my car here uh there's this part kind of of this front subframe that is a good spot uh for us to work and do this job here so I'm we're going to set the car down on the jack stand on one side and of course we'll move over and do the same thing on the other side and again just be smart here the floor jack is only meant to raise up your car uh or lower it it's not meant to hold it up in place so never crawl underneath your car unless you have it on jack stands or again some sort of ramp you can drive up on uh race ramps or some other types of ramps you could drive up on and then go underneath it as well so now we've cut to my car on the Hoist and this is the oil pan and this is the plug and filter so we need to remove uh that plug which is basically just a bolt that is on your oil pan so 17 mm wrench or ratchet and socket you should be able to break that free and then of course you need to have something ready to catch the oil this is the trickiest kind of hardest part um the oil will potentially be hot depending on how recently you just drove your car and I believe to the factory specs you technically should drive it a little bit to get it somewhat warm before you do actually drain your oil but once you break uh that free you should be able to spin it Loose gloves safety glasses both those items never a bad idea here again caution with the hot oil and it's going to squirt out pretty far when you pull that out of the way so we're going to let that drain for for a few minutes and while we let uh that oil drain from our oil pan plug uh we're going to remove this piece here that kind of hides our oil filter there's three of these uh clips that you this is what we need that flathead screwdriver for we need the three Clips uh to turn those counterclockwise and then this piece should come out of the way making it easier to get to our oil filter and then your oil filter should be able to spin off by hand otherwise they make oil filter wrenches you could buy a wrench uh to get your oil filter off again spin it counterclockwise hopefully the last person that put it on didn't put it on too tightly but again you also need to catch oil this is going to uh drop some oil uh so this is just a messy job oil changes kind of suck in general to be honest uh so you need your drain pan again underneath there you should be able to catch you know the oil from the at the same time that's coming out of your oil pan you know from the plug You released first um you should be able to catch them both at the same time ideally uh if you do it this way so of course we're going to spin our oil filter off all the way one thing I always like to do is take a look at your old oil filter um and where it came off from uh check that your old oil filter still has the seal or gasket on it it hasn't happened personally to me but I have heard horror stories of it happening where this gasket comes off the filter and then stays on the part of the car that it connects to and then when you go to reinstall your new filter all of a sudden you have two gaskets in there which is not good um so just make sure your old gasket uh stayed on that filter and the gasket is just the the black part towards the outer edge of the filter so now we're going to get our new oil ready to go again you probably have a different setup than this but whatever oil you're using you should be able to have that ready to go and um using 020 uh 0 w20 synthetic here and what I like to do since this is uh since you can kind of fill up the oil filter here's that OEM part number again in case you need it for an oem filter um but I like to add a little bit of oil uh to the filter itself because you can fill it up pretty much almost all the way if you wanted to uh before you screw it up in place I wouldn't fill it fully up cuz you probably lose some oil when you when you screw it back in place cuz it's at a little bit of an angle but the main thing I want to do is just add a little bit of oil to the filter and then have some fresh oil to put onto the gasket of this oil filter so I usually fill it up um and then usually extra oil on top and then I will just rub it around this gasket of this new oil filter and what that typically does it just makes it uh seal a bit better from what I gather and it makes it easier to get off later if you're also a person that likes to date things you could write with a marker uh the date that you're changing the oil on it so you have it written down so we're just going to go ahead and put that new oil filter back on again I filled it up probably about halfway full of oil and then I um put a little oil on that gasket and then what I like to do for tightness is basically go about hand tight and then give it about a quarter turn a little bit more and then just make sure it won't spin free again with just your hand with you know a soft little bit of squeeze you know if you only squeeze it a little bit and you can turn it back off it's probably not tight enough but uh again that's just the way I I do this next we got our oil drain plug uh that also comes with a Crush Washer and they suggest you buy a new one every time I'm just going to be totally honest I've used the same one I've done this job like 10 times I've had no issues with this Crush Washer leaking or having any issues for me uh so I don't replace the Crush Washer but feel free to do it yourself if you want to but once we've let all that oil drain out give it a good 3 to 5 minutes or more if you prefer uh once it's down to kind of just a couple drips you should be good to tighten that up of course make sure it's tight clean up any excess oil right away just to make sure everything looks good and that's it so if your car was on jack stands you could uh set it down um otherwise since we're on a hoist we're going to lower the car down and go on underneath our hood and of course to pop your hood you should be able to pop your hood by the inside the car by the driver's kick panel by the left side of the driver driver side there you should be able to pull that to unlatch your hood and once your hood is open we're going to look right here to this oil fill cap you're going to see it even says to run 020 oil on it and then this is where we're going to add our oil and uh if you need a funnel uh you could utilize a funnel depending on what you have to pour your oil in funnel is never a bad idea to have so you don't make a mess but of course we're going to add all of our oil I suggest adding uh you know at least three and 1 12 quarts um just enough so you can then go and start up the vehicle once you add the oil of course put that oil cap back on and then they recommend you go and start the vehicle and let it run for about 30 seconds and what that's going to do is circulate the oil and give you a better feel for what the actual oil level is so you can check the oil again like that oil filter if you didn't add any oil to the oil filter starting the car up and letting it run for about 30 seconds is going to send all that oil through your car and fill up that oil filter again so you can get a good feel a good gauge for your oil level after uh we check that next so right here is our oil level dipstick so we're going to pull that out um we're going to let the car sit for a little bit before we do this just so some of the oil can settle back down um but we're going to clean off that dipstick and then put it down in push it down all the way and then we're going to pull it right back out and then you should be able to check the level on the dip stick you're going to notice two markers here there's just kind of a high and a low marker you want it in between that high and low marker is basically what you want so you don't want it higher than this marker here um the this one but this but towards the bottom you want to make sure it's higher than that one so somewhere in between there is good and again about 3.7 quartz is what um it calls for when you change it with the oil filter change and that's about it now we can lower our Hood so we're going to lift up our prop rod and lower our hood and drop it down but we do want to of course clear that maintenance minder thing uh so we don't have our Dash yelling at us telling us to change our oil so to do that we're going to get inside the car of course we're going to turn the car on and then we're going to hit that home button on the steering wheel and then we're going to scroll down to maintenance and we're going to push the button in to go to maintenance as you can see my oif was at 20 20% I'm at the B uh service item so we're going to click that center button to reset it and it's going to ask us what item we want to reset and this might uh vary depending on what is set up on yours but usually you can at least clear the a or the B whatever your maintenance minor starts with and you can clear that item only um and that should work so in my case I'm clearing Item B only and now you can see it reset our oil life to 100% I recommend you check out your owners manual if you're more curious about the specifics about clearing this or if you're not comfortable doing it or you just want to write it down the old school way go ahead it is important to keep track of what you change and what you do as far as maintenance on your car so of course I always encourage you to do that and now we're back to the example of course if you had your car up on jack stands ideally uh you're done with this job so you're going to jack up the car on one side at a time remove your jack stand and then move to the other side and do the same thing so that's all I got for this video as I said I've had this car for like four or five years I've done this procedure the same way at least 10 times but that doesn't mean I do everything right so I'm curious your opinions uh maybe something you would have done differently maybe something I've I did wrong there's a better way of doing it let me know uh in the comments down below if you feel there is something I could have did differently and again I preached safety among all things while doing this so make sure you're putting yourself in a comfortable you know safe position when you're working on your vehicle make sure it's not going to fall on you when you are underneath it and again the best way you can do that is to have your car on a level surface and make sure it's in park make sure you have your wheels chocked make sure if you are lifting your car up uh with a jack that you do not go under it with just the uh with just the floor jack I should say you want to set it down on jack stands make sure it's solid before you're ever going underneath the car and if you want to take an extra safety precaution I've done this before too where if you are working on your brakes or doing something else where you had to take your wheel off go ahead and just throw your wheel underneath the car as well while you're working underneath there where it's out of the way but at least that way if something if the worst did happen and it fell it would at least fall on your wheel or something else could catch it but again even if I threw the wheels underneath the car I would still be using jack stands so be sure you use the jack stands to actually hold the car but anyways that's enough rambling for me as always this is Paul from boosted films I hope you found this video helpful and thanks so much for watching
